Narayan Van Maele is a BAFTA and IFTA-nominated cinematographer based in
Ireland. He specializes in shooting features, documentaries, and
commercials, with expertise in both film and digital formats, although
he has a particular affinity for film.

His notable achievements include
‘An Irish Goodbye’, the first short
film to ever win an Oscar, BAFTA, and IFTA. Furthermore, he shot the
feature film
‘GUTLAND’ on 35mm, starring Frederick Lau and Vicky
Krieps, which premiered at TIFF and represented Luxembourg in the 2019
Oscars.

The Sky Docu Drama series
‘Dublin Narcos’ earned Narayan his first BAFTA nomination
as well as a Royal Television Craft nomination in 2024.

In 2021, Narayan's work on the psychological horror feature film
‘You
Are Not My Mother’
premiered at TIFF Midnight Madness. The film
received six IFTA nominations, including Narayan's first IFTA nomination
for Best Cinematography. It had successful cinema releases in Ireland,
the UK, and the US in 2022 and is currently available for streaming on
Netflix in Ireland and the UK, as well as on Hulu in the US.

Another feature film,
‘Broken Law’, also received six IFTA nominations
and is currently streaming on Netflix in Ireland and the UK after a
successful theatrical run in Ireland.

In 2021, the feature music documentary
‘Love Yourself Today’, focused
on Damien Dempsey and his fans, premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh,
followed by a nationwide cinema release. The documentary received an
IFTA nomination in 2022.

The feature documentary
‘Million Dollar Pigeons’ premiered at Hot Docs
in 2022 and was nominated for an IFTA in 2023.

‘Sunlight’ premiered at DIFF and won the Jury Best Feature award at Austin Film Festival.

‘Double Blind’, is nominated for 11 IFTAS including Narayan’s second IFTA nomination. He also won the Best Cinematography award at Newport Beach Film Festival for the film.

Feature documentary ‘So this is Christmas’, shot on 35mm screened at Hot Docs and had a successful cinema run and will premiere on TV in December. Feature Doc ‘Don’t Forget to Remember’ won the audience award at DIFF and will have more festival news soon!

Ireland’s first Irish language horror feature ‘Fréamhacha’ is currently in post-production.
